Do you Know the Difference Between Natural and Organic?

Although in Today’s world the word organic and natural are the most read and written when it comes to driving attention from the health-conscious present-day generation, it is vital to know the difference.

Organic, Natural and conventional foods are three different words with quite a lot of differences.

For a food to be certified organic by USDA the cultivable land where the food is grown must be free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers for at least 3 years before cultivation.

It is the food grown in the soil that uses only plant waste as manure and without the use of chemical fertiliser and, when it comes to organic meat it is obtained from animals that are fed healthy food and allowed to grow in a pleasant environment, allowed to experience their natural growth cycle without the use of antibiotics or hormones.

The label for organic food

‘Natural’ another word seen mostly on every food label these days means that the food product does not contain any synthetic flavours or colourants that when used above a particular limit in the processing and production of a food product can harm the health of the consumer.

Conventional foods on the other hand is food produced on a commercial scale with the use of different raw materials including natural, organic and synthetic food products that are converted to edible, safe and tasty end products by the use of different processing methods, packaging techniques and also undergoes different level of quality checks before it reaches the end-user.

Food becomes healthy not only by the method of growing it but the nutrient profile it carries. Or simply said the amount of sugar, salt, fats, proteins, carbs it contains per serving.

A cake or chocolate that contains sugar, fats do not become a healthy choice just because the cocoa beans are grown organically.

This is an eye-opener for me, I had some idea that natural and organic are not the same thing but I was not completely sure. My bad that I never tried to find that out. You are so right, food doesn’t become healthy just by the method of growing. Thanks for sharing this informative post.

This is very informative, Sivaranjini. People tend to use organic and natural interchangeably but the two are definitely not the same.

Very few people understand the difference. After reading your post many will learn what organic and natural are. It is always difficult to differentiate and read the fine print. There is something called free-range chicken and eggs which are supposed to be natural

It’s important to know what you eat! I hope this post reaches to many people.
